The Buzz on Bug Jewelry

Creepy, crawly, chic

Bugs? I can’t say I’m a huge fan—unless they’re in the form of sparkly gems and precious metals. Insect motifs have appeared in jewelry designs, fine to costume, for centuries. The trend blossomed during the Victorian era, as a nostalgia for nature crept up on people as they moved from the countryside to the city. Some women even adorned themselves with live insects by attaching them to a chain, or pinning them directly to their dresses and jackets. That’s a bit much for my taste. However, I do appreciate the live-ly jewelry designs the creatures’ colors, patterns, and textures continue to inspire.
