Somewhere between straightforward solitaire studs and over-the-top chandelier sparklers sits the chicest of happy mediums—diamond drop earrings. Formal enough for a black tie affair but simple enough to pair with jeans and a tee, it’s no wonder these elegant ornaments have been adorning earlobes for over 300 years.

Earrings, of course, have been around even longer. Archeological evidence dates the earliest known specimens back to around 2600 B.C. It wasn’t until the 1700s, though, when women started wearing dramatically upswept hairdos, that gemstone jewels (and diamond earrings in particular) became de rigueur for society’s upper crust. Especially popular was the pendeloque, or a style with a top station and dramatic drop like a pendulum—what we would think of today as a classic drop earring.

Coco Chanel once famously said, “Fashion comes and goes, but style lasts forever.” Three centuries may not be forever, exactly, but we’ll take it as proof positive of the enduring appeal of diamond drop earrings. Think of them as a sartorially-sound investment, generating returns in glamor for generations to come.
