Space Out

(Inter)stellar style

The Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik I, into space in 1957, ushering in an era of intergalactic achievement influencing everything from politics and science to art and design. 2022 has designers seeing stars all over again, as a new cosmic competition for “space tourism” brews between titans of the tech and travel industries. With tickets rumored to start at around half a million dollars, we may not be setting foot aboard Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin shuttle anytime soon, but these stellar styles still have us over the moon.

Jupiter

You’re probably familiar with David Yurman for his iconic cable pieces, but lately the designer has been looking up for inspiration. In his own words, the new Solari collection “celebrates [the] perfect harmony and the sublime shape of the sun and planets.”

Moonstone

Nestled on a cozy corner of Jersey City, Love Locked offers apothecary, and home goods, and of course, a gorgeous selection of jewelry, both curated from designers across the country and created in-house, like this moonstone ring, symbolizing new beginnings and inner growth.

Sputnik

Dropping nearly four inches, these vintage Space Age earrings—inspired by the Sputnik design motif of the era—make a mid-century modern statement in 18-karat yellow and white gold.

Meteorite

In return for her focus on environmentally-conscious design, NYC-based Monique Péan seems to reap a wealth of inspiration from the Earth itself. You’ll find recycled gold and repurposed diamonds, sure, but it’s the even rarer materials—like the 4.5 billion year-old found meteorite fragment set in this ring—that really shine.

Pod

Caroline Denis, the Brooklyn-based designer behind Jolly Bijoux, deftly combines such disparate influences as Art Deco and … space travel? Somehow she makes it all work(and to spectacular effect) in her Pod collection, where clean, Deco-esque lines form futuristic shapes inspired by orbiting space capsules.

Sundial

A longtime favorite of collectors, editors, and jewelry insiders, Temple St Clair’s designs are always more than meets the eye. Take this breathtaking bracelet, created in partnership with an astrophysicist. You’d be forgiven for being too distracted by the intricate craftsmanship to notice the piece’s functional purpose—it’s a secret wearable sundial that tells the time when struck by the sun’s rays.

Orbit

Samira Sizdahkhani's eponymous jewelry line, Samira 13, is based on her obsession with the natural beauty of Tahitian South Sea pearls. Her designs, like these pearl, diamond, and white gold “Orbit” hoops, are out of this world.
