Valerie’s Story
Valerie’s Beginning
With an environmental science degree from the University of Washington, Valerie merged her passion for jewelry with the natural world to create her jewelry atelier. With no formal jewelry training, Valerie’s sharp eye for rare stones and alternative settings rooted her jewelry design career. She believes jewelry design is essential because, unlike traditional jewelry-making, “there’s a lot of thought and intention that goes into understanding the functionality.” Not only should a piece of jewelry look good, but it should feel comfortable and stand the test of time.
Personal Style
“The way that you choose to dress with jewelry says a lot about you. Personal style is a way to show the world before you even speak what you’re like. You can leave a great impression with the type of jewelry you choose to adorn yourself with. If you’re wearing a statement ring, it shows people that you might be bold or admire a specific color of gemstone. If you’re more subtle, it might match your quiet style.”

Giving Back
Valerie is involved with her alma mater, the University of Washington. She recently spoke on a panel with the School of Business aimed at guiding young business owners. She has plans to start a mentorship program to help guide and support small businesses, particularly young businesses.
A Semi-Custom Approach
Valerie does custom design for engagement rings only. She offers specific settings (that she’s designed herself), from modern or vintage to bezels or three-stone. You can then customize from those settings. Teal sapphire, anyone? To source stones, Valerie and her staff search their inventory first, and if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they’ll happily work with you to find the perfect stones.
Timeless Heirlooms
“I think what makes jewelry heirloom is the artisanship, how it’s made, how sturdy it is. I pay attention to trends, but more important to me is timelessness. Silhouettes that look and feel good now should look and feel the same way in forty years, even more. They’re going to age, but I still want them to be in good shape, which means constructing them well. I always encourage my clients when they’re considering this investment to think about how it’s not just for them at that moment, it’s for their future and the legacy they want to leave behind.”
Alt Style
“Everyone is different, stylistically. Diamonds are classic, but we specialize in alternative styles. Alternative to me represents vibrant gemstones, which are mainly sapphires. Here in the Pacific Northwest, teal sapphires really resonate with our customers, and we do a great job of sourcing beautiful teal sapphires from Australia and Montana sapphires. We have some fantastic peach sapphires as well.”
Style Strength
Valerie would love to outfit Michelle Obama in her jewels. “She’s intelligent, savvy, and she represents strength.” Valerie feels her jewelry represents that as well.
