The Barmakian family’s jewelry legacy started in Armenia over one hundred years ago.

After fleeing the Armenian Genocide, five brothers made their way to New England around 1910. One of the brothers, Levon Barmakian, was a jeweler and his wife was a stonecutter. What started as a husband and wife business grew as their family grew, and over the decades became one of the largest family-owned purveyors of fine jewelry, diamonds, and watches in New England.

New England’s First Precision Caster

While Levon Barmakian was growing his business, he heard about dental casting. Levon had always used the old world method of taking melted gold and hand-piercing it—a genuinely handmade process. A customer would request a piece of jewelry, Levon would show them stones, and after they chose a stone, he would give it to Charles Martin—a Paris-trained jewelry designer who designed for Tiffany. Martin would sketch three or four different design options, and Levon showed the sketches to the customer. Only after this lengthy design process would Levon be able to create the piece.

Levon saw the potential efficiency in applying casting to jewelry-making, so he left Boston for a year and a half to learn the skill in California. Thus, Levon became the first precision caster in New England.

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Barmakian Jewelers had exponential growth when more family members joined the business.

They opened two more showrooms in Framingham and Nashua, New Hampshire, in addition to their original showroom in Boston at the Jeweler's Building. While the Boston location remains a hidden gem that only features jewelry in an intimate space, the other showrooms are larger, with a selection that includes gifts and well-known jewelry designers like Anna Beck, Tacori, and Charles Krypell.

Conflict-Free Diamonds

Barmakian Jewelers support the Kimberley Process and have a zero-tolerance policy toward conflict diamonds—diamonds used to fund rebel armies to oppose legitimate and internationally recognized governments. Barmakian Jewelers only purchases diamonds through the largest and most respected suppliers who adhere to and enforce the standards established by the Kimberley Process.

Diamonds are a significant source of revenue for many African nations, such as Namibia and Botswana, employing and providing healthcare and education to thousands. Barmakian Jewelers continues to support and promote any process that works to uphold legitimacy in the diamond trade.
